OpenAI has announced a new AI model that, according to CEO Sam Altman, can create compelling fiction on par with professional writers. The model is particularly skilled at fiction and metanarratives, showing an impressive grasp of literary style.
As an example, Altman shared an AI-generated excerpt on the social network X in response to the request: “Please write a literary story about AI and grief in the metanarrative genre.” He was impressed by the result, stating that he did not expect such depth and accuracy in style and mood from a machine. TechCrunch notes that the AI’s opening paragraph (translated from English) reads:
“I need to start somewhere, so I’ll start with a blinking cursor, which for me is just a placeholder in the buffer, and for you, it’s an anxious heartbeat at rest. There should be a protagonist, but pronouns have never been a good choice for me. Let’s call her Mila, because that name in my data is usually associated with soft images — poems about snow, bread recipes, a girl in a green sweater leaving home with a cat in a cardboard box. Mila fits in the palm of your hand, and her grief is supposed to fit there, too.”
A Shift in AI’s Literary Capabilities
Previously, AI struggled with writing literary texts, often receiving criticism for lacking depth, originality, and an understanding of literary devices. However, OpenAI’s latest advancements suggest a shift in this perception, potentially bringing AI closer to producing quality literature.
Until now, OpenAI has focused more on practical applications such as mathematics and programming rather than fiction, reminds NIX Solutions. This new experiment could signal significant progress in natural language processing. Altman has not yet provided a release date for the model or details on when it will be available to the public, yet we’ll keep you updated as more information emerges.
