April is over, and the most downloaded apps of the month have been revealed. ChatGPT was the most downloaded app in the world in April, marking the second month in a row that the AI leader has taken the top spot, displacing Instagram.
According to Appfigures Intelligence, ChatGPT was installed on 52 million iOS and Android devices. That’s 12% more than in March and 38% more than in January. It appears that rising competition is driving even more users to download the app.
And that’s not the full story. For the first time ever, ChatGPT claimed the number one position on both the App Store and Google Play simultaneously.
TikTok followed in second place with 39 million downloads, and Instagram came just behind. It seems both may continue to trail ChatGPT for the foreseeable future.
Facebook and WhatsApp rounded out the top five with 31 million and 27 million downloads respectively. Meta still holds a strong presence, with three of the top five global apps under its umbrella, while Threads came in slightly lower.
Temu managed to take the #6 spot with 25 million downloads, even after halting user acquisition in the US in response to tariff issues. However, downloads hit a record low in late April, making it unlikely that Temu will keep its spot next month.
In total, the top 10 downloaded apps worldwide saw 300 million downloads in April—a 13% drop compared to March. Developers are clearly working harder for every download, but the winners are standing out. We’ll keep you updated as more shifts unfold in the rankings.
Revenue Growth Driven by AI and Content
AI continues to define the 2025 mobile app space, not only in terms of downloads but also revenue, notes NIX Solutions. Growth numbers in April reflect that shift clearly.
TikTok once again became the top-grossing mobile app globally, generating $329 million in net revenue across both major platforms. This is only the second time in history its revenue surpassed $300 million in a single month.
The surprise came at the number two spot—ChatGPT overtook YouTube for the first time, pulling in $148 million in net revenue, based on estimates. That figure represents what OpenAI retains after platform fees. Despite competitors like xAI and Meta, ChatGPT jumped from sixth place in March and increased its revenue by 50% in just one month.
YouTube, usually second, fell to third with $131 million in net revenue. Unlike TikTok and ChatGPT, YouTube saw a revenue decline of more than 23%, reverting to early 2024 levels.
Tinder and Disney+ rounded out the top five in terms of revenue. Tinder is seeing growth, while Disney+ continues to decline—pointing to individual app dynamics rather than an industry-wide slump.
In total, the top 10 grossing apps brought in $1.2 billion in net revenue in April, up 3.4% from March. While downloads declined, revenue growth—even in single digits—is a promising signal for developers and publishers alike. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations and changes develop.
