At the annual Google I/O 2025 conference, the company shared new details about how Android XR smart glasses will function in daily life. These innovative devices will be equipped with a camera, microphones, and speakers, along with an optional built-in display in the lenses.
The glasses are designed to synchronize with a smartphone, allowing users to access various applications without the need to take out their phone. Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence will play a central role by being able to “see and hear” the surrounding environment, analyze the context in real time, and provide users with relevant and helpful information. Among the supported services are Google Calendar, Google Maps, Google Messages, Google Photos, and others.
Design and Brand Collaborations
Google has highlighted its focus on creating a stylish and wearable design. “To make the technology attractive, we have established cooperation with brands such as Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, because glasses should be such that you want to wear them all day!” the company stated. This emphasis on aesthetics aims to ensure the smart glasses become a natural part of everyday fashion rather than feeling like a tech accessory.
Meanwhile, the partnership with Samsung is entering a new phase. Beyond the previously announced headset, collaboration will now extend to Android XR glasses. Google and Samsung will jointly develop both a software platform and reference hardware, which will allow other manufacturers to create their own versions of XR glasses. Developers can expect access to this platform in the second half of the year.
Prototypes, Developer Support, and Future Plans
Google is currently testing XR prototypes with a group of trusted testers, actively gathering feedback and insights, adds NIX Solutions. In addition to the primary device, it was revealed that a second Android XR product is also under development in collaboration with XREAL. This portable, pluggable device—resembling a pair of thick sunglasses—will be released as a developer edition. It’s intended to give developers early access so they can begin testing and optimizing applications for the XR experience.
As the Android XR platform continues to grow, more collaborations and innovations are expected. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available and developer tools are rolled out.
