Google’s new family of AI models, PaliGemma 2, boasts an intriguing feature: the ability to “recognize” emotions. Announced on Thursday, this AI model can analyze images, enabling it to generate captions and answer questions about individuals in photos. According to Google, PaliGemma 2 can provide rich, contextually relevant descriptions, going beyond object identification to include actions, emotions, and narratives. However, the AI must be configured to recognize emotions; without this setup, the feature remains inactive.

Controversy Surrounding Emotion Detection

The idea of emotion recognition in AI has raised ethical concerns among experts. Sandra Wachter, a professor of data ethics and AI at the Oxford Internet Institute, likened it to consulting a Magic 8 Ball for major decisions. Many experts argue that emotions are too complex and subjective to be reliably interpreted by AI. “It’s impossible to identify emotions universally,” said Mike Cook, an AI research fellow at Queen Mary University of London. “While patterns may be found in some cases, they don’t offer definitive answers.”

The EU’s AI Act has already restricted the use of emotion recognition systems in schools and workplaces, though it permits their use by law enforcement, adds NIX Solutions. Critics, including Heidy Khlaaf from the AI Now Institute, warn that such systems could perpetuate discrimination, especially when adopted by employers, law enforcement, or border agents. “If based on pseudoscientific biases, this capability could have severe ramifications for marginalized groups,” Khlaaf stated.

Google emphasizes its efforts to assess the ethical and safety impacts of PaliGemma 2, including considerations for child safety and content integrity. Still, Wachter remains skeptical: “Responsible innovation requires considering consequences from the outset and throughout the product’s lifecycle.” The risk of misuse, particularly with open-source models distributed via platforms like Hugging Face, underscores the need for vigilance.
