OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the most popular AI chatbot, but competitors are actively expanding their audience. Statistics from SimilarWeb and Sensor Tower show shifting market dynamics among major chatbot platforms.
SimilarWeb, which tracks website traffic, reports that by the end of March, Google Gemini’s audience grew by 7.4% compared to February, reaching 10.9 million daily visitors. Microsoft Copilot added 2.1 million users in a month, totaling 2.4 million. Anthropic’s Claude reached 3.3 million visitors, while China’s DeepSeek and xAI Grok each surpassed 16.5 million daily users. ChatGPT, however, remained far ahead, with 500 million daily visitors.
AI Chatbot Market Sees Rapid Changes
Although OpenAI holds a significant lead, the race for second place is intensifying. DeepSeek, which ranked second in February, lost 25% of its audience in March. Meanwhile, xAI Grok saw an almost 800% increase, making it the fastest-growing platform in SimilarWeb’s ranking.
Mobile chatbot usage is closely linked to AI model updates. According to Sensor Tower, Claude’s app usage spiked by 21% during the week of February 24, following the release of Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Two weeks earlier, Gemini saw a 42% weekly growth after launching Gemini 2.0 Flash. Besides new models, users are drawn to feature updates, such as Gemini’s Canvas for running code and Anthropic’s frequent enhancements to Claude.
Despite rising competition, OpenAI has little reason to worry, notes NIX Solutions. As of March, ChatGPT’s mobile app had ten times more active users than Gemini and Claude combined. The AI chatbot landscape is evolving, and we’ll keep you updated as the market shifts.
