NIX Solutions: Customize Windows 11 Copilot Key Easily

In the Windows 11 preview build 22635.4225 (KB5043186) on the Beta channel, Microsoft introduced a feature allowing you to change the assignment of the Copilot key present on Copilot+ PC class laptops. Instead of launching the AI assistant, you can configure this key to open another application, but it must meet specific criteria. However, this limitation can be bypassed.

How to Change the Copilot Key Assignment

Within system settings, you now have the option to choose which application will be launched by pressing the Copilot button. The only requirement is that the app must be “packaged and signed by MSIX.” Microsoft explains this limitation as a measure to ensure the security and privacy of Windows 11 users, meaning only certified applications can be launched using the Copilot key. We’ll keep you updated on any changes to this functionality.

What Is MSIX and How to Bypass the Limitation

MSIX is a new software packaging format that offers increased reliability and prioritizes network bandwidth and disk space usage over traditional executable files. It ensures safer installations, but limits you to certified apps for now.

However, the method proposed in the Windows 11 Beta isn’t the only option available, notes NIX Solutions. The Copilot key corresponds to the F23 key, which originated back in the IBM era when keyboards had function keys ranging from F1 to F24. Therefore, you can use third-party software to assign the F23 (Copilot) key to launch any application you prefer, bypassing the MSIX requirement, even before the public update of Windows 11.
